The spectacle of water, in the heart of the village

Just a few hundred metres from the town, surrounded by greenery at the foot of the Matese, the Parco dei Mulini is one of the most evocative corners of Santa Maria del Molise. Here the waters of the Rio open into small waterfalls, streams and pools, creating a fresh, idyllic landscape often described as "picture-perfect": the ideal place to find peace at any time of year.

It is no coincidence that Santa Maria del Molise is considered a true "town of water": in the past it was even called Capo d'Acqua ("Head of Water"), a testament to its wealth of springs and streams. That same abundance can be admired today in its most spectacular form right here, where the water cascades from drop to drop until it flows into the Rio, one of the main tributaries of the Biferno.

“Capo d'Acqua” — “Head of Water”: the village's ancient name, which alone tells of its soul tied to the springs.

Among waterfalls, mills and memory

The park's name comes from the old stone mills that once dotted the watercourse: tied to the water supply and daily activities, they were the busy heart of the community. The water turned the millstones and shaped the life of the town; today the same landscape preserves those structures as a living testimony of the ancient bond between the village and its water resources, offering a place of beauty and rest where you can let the sound of the Rio guide you.

Nature to discover

The surrounding vegetation is typical of the central Apennines, with broadleaf and conifer woods covering the slopes of the Matese and providing shelter for many species of wildlife. The rare river crayfish even lives in these clear waters, a small local treasure, while along the streams it is easy to spot numerous waterbirds: an invitation to observe nature up close and get to know it better.

A stop for everyone

The Parco dei Mulini is meant to be enjoyed slowly: benches, wooden tables and an equipped picnic area invite you to stop in the shade, while the playground makes it perfect for families too. A short distance away there is a small restaurant where you can taste traditional local dishes, and free parking is available nearby. Whether for a short walk, a photo stop or a relaxing afternoon, every season here has its own charm.
